Oleander Joy could not have said which she loved more, detasseling corn or Wanda Beaver. Most girls detasseled for a few summers during high school and then went on to other jobs, but Oleander kept going back. She loved easing through the cornstalks under the summer sun, sliding her hand up toward the tip of tassel after tassel and then yanking sharply so that the tassel came off intact in her palm.
